Everything The Light Touches
“The violence we teach our sons in telling them to Be Men is the same that keeps us up at night worrying about our daughters.”
-Adrienne Rich
Everything the Light Touches is a book that explores the male and female gaze, the fear of inherent violence in masculinity, and the intimacy of a partnership through the filter of my own experience. The book discusses a link between my art practice, specifically my fabrication process, and the growth and development of American men.
I use objects as a stand-in for the body, such as a series of three lamps that range from an incomplete rendering to a wholly formed light. I also render male figures incompletely to isolate the investigation of men to just a physical body. The book addresses what we attach to when using the word male.
Everything the Light Touches is rendered in watercolor, graphite, and digitally manipulated photography. The natural structure of a book produces a diptych, which enables a sense of two-channel video art. Some sets of images support each other while others contradict.
My book is a collective affirming call to join the feminist movement and for all of us to liberate ourselves from patriarchy.
